"Five Talents is not a donor, it is a partner. I did not sit at my desk writing them a proposal and they send a contract which we implement. We are here to design it together."

Rooted in community consultation, Five Talents’ first partnership in Malawi is building literacy and savings groups designed and owned by local people, to ensure lasting change in some of the country’s most vulnerable communities.

In early 2025, Five Talents was invited by the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire to partner in the development of a savings group programme in Malawi. This marked a significant step forward in our commitment to empower vulnerable communities across rural Africa.

The Warm Heart of Africa
Often called the “Warm Heart of Africa” for its hospitality and vibrant culture, Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa. Home to nearly 19 million people, most Malawians live in rural areas and rely on agriculture for survival. Staple crops such as maize, tobacco and tea form the backbone of the economy - but increasingly unpredictable rainfall and longer dry spells have made farming less reliable.

In 2023, 72% of the population lived below the $2.15 international poverty line, up from 70.1% in 2019 (African Development Bank). With limited access to affordable credit or safe savings options, many families were unable to make essential investments or protect themselves against shocks. Even small improvements, like irrigation equipment or better seeds, remained out of reach.

The Challenge of Climate Change
Climate change has compounded existing challenges. Erratic weather patterns, soil degradation and severe storms have disrupted agricultural livelihoods and heightened food insecurity. Without buffers, families often had no choice but to sell key assets.
