KERICHO IMPACT MARATHON

Oct 2017: a race like no other

Between Sunday 22nd and Saturday 28th October 2017, we'll be taking 50 runners out to Kericho, a tea growing region situated in the west of Kenya. Whether you're a casual jogger, an aspiring marathon participant, or a seasoned runner looking for a challenge, we've got a distance that will suit you.

Why's this a race like no other? Because you'll be raising money for the very communities through which you'll be running. You'll have the opportunity to meet some of the entrepreneurs that Five Talents works with, and to see exactly how your race will have an impact.

We've got 10k, half, and full marathons on offer in Kericho. Join with hundreds of Kenyans as we run a stunning route through the cool highlands in the centre of the country. Click here for more race details.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT YOUR RACE

Visit the Five Talents financial inclusion programme in Kenya and see for yourself how it changes lives - spend time with some of the 14,500 beneficiaries who access our savings, loans and business skills training.

View the video below to find out about Five Talents UK's work in East Africa and how it impacts the communities you'll be running through. You can also read more about our model, impact, and clients on our main site.

Fundraising

We ask that each runner raises a suggested amount of £1000, every pound of which will remain in Kenya, impacting the lives of communities like the ones you'll be running through.

Over the course of the year we'll be providing our runners with fundraising tips and help setting up donation pages. For runners who opt for shorter distances, we are happy to relax our suggested fundraising total a little, though every little helps!

Meet a client: Lucy Mjuki Mwikaria

Lucy and her family live in a village in Embu County, in central Kenya - an area where Five Talents has been working for the past six years. Without any reliable income, her children were not always able to attend school and Lucy was worried that like her, they may never complete secondary school.

As soon as she joined the group Lucy began saving the little she could and after 6 months had saved £17 - enough to borrow a loan. Lucy used the loan to build a small wooden shop which she has now grown into a Macadamia nut business using subsequent loans. ‘The savings are a security for me. I felt great when I paid back my first loan and it motivated me to take out my second loan.’

Today, Lucy’s nut businesses is flourishing. At the moment she buys nuts from the farmers and sells them on to the Kenya Nut Company but she has aspirations to work for the company collecting nuts from the ‘middle men’ like herself.

‘As well as being able to pay school fees I now have a cow that provides milk for my family and I even have some extra to sell so I don’t need to buy milk anymore. From the training given by Five Talents I can now budget my money and do a cost analysis for my small business to see where I am making profit.’

Why We've teamed up with the UN's Global Goals

The UN recognises that without access to financial services, many are unable to increase their incomes at all. Access to economic services such as microfinance is therefore included within a clause of this particular goal.

At Five Talents, we believe that an increased income is vital, not as a goal in itself, but to give people dignity and choice in how they support themselves. For many in our programmes, this may be as simple as being able to invest in their child’s education, build a well to access safe water or visit the doctor when they are sick. In terms of good reasons to get out of bed and train for a marathon, this is pretty high on the list.

By 2030, the UN hopes to have eliminated all discrimination, violence, and all 'harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilations'.

Once a woman earns an income, her decision-making power at home and in the wider community increases. This means she is no longer forced to depend on her husband and her children are more likely to go to school and to receive nutritious and regular meals. In some areas where Five Talents works, there are particular issues facing women such as female genital mutilation or gender-based violence. Here our partners work closely with the whole community to teach about the positive role women can play and to teach women about their rights. Any money you raise will have a serious impact on the communities in Kericho, Kenya, where the majority of our clients are women.

Our financial inclusion strategy is a powerful tool in the struggle for sustained and sustainable economic growth. Using country specific social impact surveys, we ensure that any funds you raise are used to help the most needy and excluded within communities.

Some of those that we work with have been dependent on food aid for many years - reliant on these hand outs but with no hope of feeding their own families. Changing mindsets and showing communities that they can use the skills, trust and small pockets of money they already have to increase their incomes is a big part of our work. Whether you raise £1000 or go wild and raise ten times that, you'll be providing the community of Iringa with a helping hand, not a hand out.
