At 22, Hannah was determined to shape her own future. She dreamt of studying Human Resources, driven by a desire to ensure there is justice for women in offices.
Her parents are members of a Five Talents supported savings group in Baringo, Kenya, and modelled the values of saving and planning ahead to their children. Inspired by their example, Hannah decided to join them. “I wanted to start my own business because I didn’t want to rely on anyone. My parents have always provided for me and my siblings. I want to be self reliant.”
For nine months, Hannah saved diligently with her group before applying for her first loan. With that capital, she opened a small shop. Training sessions helped her find her niche: “Even though there are other shops in the area, mine is different because I open very early in the morning.” By selling tea and chapati before sunrise, alongside groceries and household items, she set herself apart from the competition.
Her hard work produced results. “Because of my profits, now I am saving double what I did before,” Hannah says. Looking ahead, she hopes not only to fund her own university studies, but also to pass the business on to her younger siblings. In doing so, she is creating opportunities that ripple far beyond her own story.
