Sara, Rwanda

Sara and her group are a fantastic example of how a community can thrive and harness the power of what they have. They have turned their community garden into a thriving hub where they work together to grow carrots and vegetables. Their first carrot harvest brought in a profit of 80,000 Rwandan Francs, and they continue to diversify what they grow. More recently, the group began planting potatoes, which are more drought-resistant and less dependent on rain.  The group also makes and sells mandazi and samosas, providing both an income and food for their families with the leftovers. Inspired by the Catholic community around them, they also craft and sell beaded rosaries. Through these enterprises, the group has already saved 550,000 Rwandan Francs and built a social fund of 75,000 Rwandan Francs, with each member contributing 300 Francs monthly to support one another in times of need. With each new investment, Sara and her group are building resilience – strengthening not only their livelihoods but also the wellbeing of their families and their wider community.
