Angelina, South Sudan

Angelina’s life has been marked by conflict and loss. Forced to flee her home in South Sudan, she became a refugee in Sudan, only to return when war broke out there too. In the turmoil she lost her husband, her parents, her home, and her family’s livelihood. She also suffered severe injuries to her legs during a rebel attack.

In the midst of her grief, women from her church reached out. Many of them had also lost loved ones, and they knew that their support could provide her with strength. They offered Angelina both comfort and an unexpected opportunity: the chance to go to school.

Like most women in South Sudan, Angelina had never learned to read or write and had assumed she never would. But with encouragement from friends, she joined a new literacy programme run by the Mothers’ Union, and a year later, Angelina proudly received a certificate in literacy and numeracy. “Now I can manage to read my Bible in [the] local dialect, count money, write my names, and read the sign posts,” she explains. “I can teach my children at home and I am very happy because of the certificate I got. It encourages my children to go to school.”

With her new skills, Angelina joined a savings group and began planning a brighter future. Today, both of her children are in school. Angelina moves with determination, even on a crutch. She has become a trusted voice in her church, inspiring others through her faith and example.
