Farai is the pastor in charge in Buranga. Her journey into leadership began in 2012, when she learned to read and write through the literacy programme supported by Comic Relief. “Literacy is what made me strong and made me a leader,” she says. Buranga has lived through deep scars of conflict. Years ago, the Dinka clashed with the Mundari. Houses and the local church were burned, food stores destroyed, and lives lost. “They stole all the food from the granaries and then burned whatever remained so we would have no food left,” Farai recalls. Overwhelmed, the whole community fled to a safer place near Mundri. In the aftermath, Farai reached out to a fellow pastor. She believed that literacy could motivate people to return and rebuild. “I believed then that it would strengthen people who were willing to come back,” she explains. When the literacy circle opened in Buranga, the group also received trauma healing and peacebuilding training. Many who had lost their faith found it restored. “It was as if people were born again,” Farai remembers. In time, the community decided to take a step few imagined possible: they invited those who had harmed them to reconcile, offering forgiveness so they could live together in peace. Hope began to take root. Plans to rebuild the church emerged, and in a remarkable act of reconciliation, some of the very people who had burned it contributed more than 70 poles for the new roof. Today, some of them even worship alongside the community they once harmed.
Building Peace and Confidence
For Farai, literacy brought not only confidence to lead but also courage to preach forgiveness and hope. Her story shows how education, healing, and reconciliation can restore communities devastated by conflict. When you invest in Five Talents, you are empowering leaders like Farai to rebuild, to strengthen faith, and to nurture peace where it once seemed impossible.
