Jamila, Tanzania

When Jamila first moved to Vicoba, she was filled with fear. Moving to a new community brought challenges and uncertainty while she found her feet, but joining a local savings group changed this. “Now I am happy to sit with my group and have peace and enjoy our activities together,” she explains. At their very first share-out, 17 members came together – and there was no conflict. People noticed the unity in the group, and it inspired more to get involved. Today, the group has grown to 24 members. For her, the impact has been both personal and practical. “This savings group has supported me in my life. I have a pea farm that provides me with profit.” Others in the group have also flourished: Grace and her husband now run a shop that generates reliable income for their household. As membership has grown, so has demand for more groups. The example of peace and enterprise has drawn in others from the community. Together, members also give back  – supporting their local church with three bags of cement for the construction of a new building. Their Community Fund has reached 720,000 TZS (around £230), which they use to support vulnerable families with their basic needs.
