When Mary first joined her savings group, she didn’t have a business and felt her standing in the community was low. But contributing to the group’s savings gave her the confidence and opportunity to take her first steps into building a business. Her initial loan allowed her to open a small stall selling local produce, and this first step gave her the confidence to grow. After repaying that loan, she applied for a second, this time investing in a fish business. Setting up a roadside stall, Mary began selling fried fish to neighbours and travellers who passed by. As her business grew, the profits brought her choices. She was able to reinvest in her stall, to build a house for her family and diversify her income streams to boost financial sustainability. Today, Mary’s businesses are thriving. She employs others and has invested in a boda boda, which her son uses to run his own motorcycle taxi service. That first loan started a momentum that continues to provide for her family, and ripple out to offer employment opportunities in her community.
