Sarah, Tanzania

In Tanzania, Sarah and her husband Joseph were raising their young daughter but often struggled to make ends meet. With nothing set aside, they were unprepared for unexpected setbacks.

“When a neighbour introduced Sarah to the local savings group, she decided to give it a try. Her small market stall brought in some income, but it wasn’t generating enough to provide a steady and reliable income for her family.
By saving regularly, Sarah built enough capital to qualify for her first loan of TZS 200,000 (about £60), giving her a chance to expand her stall.

With support from the group, Sarah invested wisely. She used her loan to expand, diversify her products and reach new customers. Training sessions helped her sharpen her business skills and make more effective use of her resources. “Saving helps a person to be confident,” Sarah explains. “When you face a challenge, you know where to turn. Loans increase our capital and allow us to make bigger plans.”
Today, Sarah runs a thriving market stall selling produce and household staples. Her profits not only secure her family’s present but are also opening new opportunities for her daughter’s future. As Sarah puts it: “From my perspective, having access to savings, loans, and business opportunities is crucial.”
