Flomena, Uganda

When Flomena first joined her savings group, life at home was difficult. Although her husband was the family’s breadwinner, he discouraged her from starting a business and rarely provided for her personal needs. “He bought me one set of clothes once and then stopped,” she said. “I had to wash and wear the same piece over and over.”

Determined to create her own opportunities, she joined an established savings group. The first attempt was short-lived, but when the group restarted last year she committed herself fully. Saving each week gave her both confidence and capital. “My savings helped me get a loan to start my own business,” she says.

She looked around her community for opportunities and saw a need. With many motorcycle drivers in the village, fuel was always in demand. At the same time, she drew on a skill she had taught herself by watching others – hair braiding. “I saw people plaiting and earning money. It motivated me to learn, and I learnt by observing.” She began buying hair to weave and built up a small business in the village.

Today, her profits support her household in a way she was never able – paying school fees, covering food and medicine and even giving towards her church. What began as an act of independence has grown into a thriving business that strengthens both her family and her community.
