Margaret, Uganda

Margaret lost both her parents at a young age, leaving her in a childhood of uncertainty. She was unable to finish school, so married early and had her first child in her teens.

Margaret worked long hours on small farms and in people’s homes, earning just enough to scrape by, but she was driven by the dream of giving her child more than she had.

When a savings group was formed in her village, Margaret joined with hesitation and quickly discovered that the group offered far more than a place to save – it was a space of encouragement and possibility. For the first time, she had access to a loan and the support of women who believed change was possible.

With her first small loan, Margaret began selling roasted peanuts and maize at the local market. Week after week, she grew her business and gained confidence. Literacy and training sessions helped her keep accurate records, budget wisely, and make plans for the future.

As her income grew, Margaret was able to buy a cow and reinvest her profits into her farm. She repaired her home, bought solar light for her family, and ensured that all seven of her children could attend school.

The transformation reached beyond her own household. Where once she had been overlooked, Margaret was now recognised as a leader. She began encouraging other women to join savings groups, to learn, to save, and to believe in their own potential.

“Because of the programme, I came from poverty to dignity. From a despised woman to a respected woman, and from hidden to a decision maker.”

Today, Margaret is not only a businesswoman but also a respected voice in her church and a decision maker in her community.
