Our story

Five Talents equips people in rural Africa with the tools to create change through savings, small businesses and local partnerships.

Our story

Since 1999, Five Talents has worked alongside trusted local partners in rural Africa to deliver lasting change through literacy and enterprise.

So, what does that change look like?

This has changed the lives of over 300,000 people, mostly women. They have learnt to read and write, save, start small businesses, and transform their own lives and those of their families.

It means savings group members are providing their own food and housing and sending their children - notably daughters - to school. They are creating jobs in their communities and building peace as well as economic and climate resilience.

Our UK and US offices focus on raising funds, securing investment from supporters and organisations who are as passionate as we are about female empowerment, enterprise and transformation. Our colleagues at Five Talents Kenya provide funding, training and programme support across rural Africa.

We support communities in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda -  helping people build savings, grow businesses and harness the power of what they have.

Through the establishment of locally led savings groups, individuals - many of whom have never had access to formal banking - receive practical training in financial literacy, entrepreneurship and group leadership. With guidance and support, they launch and grow small businesses that create lasting income, resilience and financial sustainability.

This model is not about giving handouts. It’s about unlocking potential, restoring agency and fuelling enterprise at the grassroots level: where even the smallest investment can ignite transformational change.

Five Talents works in close partnership with the Anglican Church. Their trusted presence in communities makes them a vital partner in delivering  literacy and savings group programmes, particularly in areas affected by conflict or instability, where other organisations often struggle to gain access.

Through its network of churches and community groups, the Church helps us reach some of the most remote and under served areas, offering a bridge to economic opportunity where little other support exists.

Faith is a core value for us as an organisation and sits at the heart of our working relationships with partners in Africa - we seek to model inclusivity and openness; with our programmes, partnerships and staff teams offering welcome to those of all faiths and none.
