TOUR DE TALENTS 2022

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2022 Tour de Talents!

Together we raised over £30,000 and travelled over 33,000 miles. This will bring Savings Groups to 1,200 new members this year. Whether you logged 1 mile or 100 you made an incredible impact. We are so grateful for your support!

This event is now closed, but you can still enter our extra challenges until 23:59 6 July! Below is information on the 2022 Tour de Talents.

This time we’re going even further!

Last year our partners supported 30,000 members in Savings Groups! This is a huge achievement which would not be possible without generous supporters like you!

In May 2021, more than 200 of you took part in our Tour de Talents challenge; you ran, walked, cycled or swam over 7,040 miles in one week and raised £11,000 for Five Talents - surpassing all our targets. So, this year, we’ve planned something even bigger…

30 days - 30,000 members - £30,000 raised

During the whole month of June, we’re challenging you collectively to travel 30,000 miles (under your own steam)! Along the way you’ll meet some of the inspirational Savings Group members whom your Tour de Talents fundraising supports. It’s free for you to enter and you don’t have to raise any sponsor money; instead, our generous sponsors at Volante, the Vardy Foundation, the Anchor Match Fund and the Albert Van den Bergh Charitable Trust will donate £1 for every mile you cover!

This year we’ll start in South Sudan and will hop across the globe visiting countries where we fundraise & our partners work until we reach the finish line in Burundi after travelling 30,000 miles. Every mile you walk, run, swim or cycle raises £1 towards training for Savings Group members so they can continue to learn, earn, save and invest as a team - just like us. The challenge is open to as many participants as possible! It’s all taking place virtually, so whether you’re right here in the UK or going on a hike abroad, or live anywhere else in the world, you can log your miles for the challenge. We’ve even crafted an extra challenge to keep you motivated! Check out the map below to see our route.

Along the way we’ll share stories of some of the 30,000 Savings Group members our partners support. You’ll be inspired by their stories - and by the miles many Savings Group members cover on foot or bicycle to attend their Group meetings or small business. Why not head out for a walk, run, swim or bike ride with a friend and tell them a bit more about Five Talents? You can both sign up and log your miles individually, which doubles your impact!

30,000 miles, 11 countries, 30 days, £30,000… Together we can make it happen! Sign up below to join us - and please share this challenge with your friends too. Anyone is welcome to join Team Tour de Talents!

Please visit the FAQs section to find out more, or email us if your question isn’t answered below.

Please note - you can participate in this challenge from anywhere in the world but all participants must follow your local government guidelines for social distancing and COVID-19 prevention when participating in exercise or group activities in relation to this challenge event.

EXERCISE

Runners in Kericho, Kenya, where Five Talents has hosted a marathon with Impact Marathon Series.

Our challenge is for everyone. You can exercise for Five Talents wherever, whenever. Whether you’re logging miles on the road, in the park, at your home or in a gym, your miles matter! Every mile counts; make sure you’re logging them on Challenge Hound so our team can go further on the map shown above.

IMPACT

A Five Talents entrepreneur at her business.

Over 260,000 entrepreneurs have benefitted from Five Talents’ programmes over the last 20 years. For every mile you log, our sponsors will donate £1. If we complete all 30,000 miles by 30th June we’ll have raised a total of £30,000. Your miles will support our partners so more than 30,000 entrepreneurs go further in their small businesses next year.

SHARE

Our trainer, Sam, sharing pictures with Savings Group members.

Please invite your friends to sign up too! To reach over 30,000 miles within 30 days and release the full £30,000, we’ll need as many people running, walking, swimming or cycling for Five Talents as possible. Share #TourdeTalents on social media, send this webpage to your contacts and invite your friends or family for a walk, run, swim or cycle to tell them more about our work. They can log their miles too!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our aim is to inspire you and your friends as you read about our work and raise funds at the same time. We’re a relatively small charity with just 6 staff in the UK office, and we have limited funds to spend on marketing. We’ve always found ‘word of mouth’ is our best marketing strategy; when our wonderful supporters tell their colleagues and friends stories of our entrepreneurs, they listen! This challenge event is an easy way to spread the word about our projects, in a season when (for UK supporters) we can be outdoors with family & friends. Of course the fundraising dimension is important too, and we’re so thankful to our generous sponsors.

Challenge Hound is a platform which helps individuals and organisations create and track group challenges & races. When we log our miles through Challenge Hound they’ll update the map above so we can see how far we’ve gone together!

Fill in the form above and we’ll email you the link to our challenge on Challenge Hound. When you click on the link all you have to do is click the green “Join Challenge” button and Challenge Hound will talk you through the rest! It is completely free for you to sign up and participate.

Yes, we'd love you to! Thanks to our friends at Volante, The Vardy Foundation, The Albert Van den Bergh Foundation & The Anchor Foundation, you don't have to fundraise; we aim to raise £30,000 through the team effort. But we’ve heard some of you would like to do a bit of additional fundraising and of course, we’d love you to do that. You or your friends can make a donation here. If you'd like, encourage friends or colleagues to sponsor you for every mile too. If you need any assistance with fundraising, you can reach out to Megan, our Senior Communications & Events officer, by email: megan@fivetalents.org.uk

We’ll still raise £1 per mile; if we cover 1,200 miles, for example, we’ll raise £1,200. But we hope between us we can make it to the finish line in time and release the full £30,000!

Yes please! In fact why not invite as many friends as you can to all log your miles! They simply need to register themselves here.

There are two ways to log an activity with Challenge Hound. You can do so manually or by connecting an app.

To log an activity manually visit this link You’ll then click “log an activity” and be able to input your activity, the time it took and the distance travelled. Then click save and it will add the activity mileage to the map!

Alternatively, if you’d prefer, you can connect an App listed on the Apps page and activities will be automatically synced to Challenge Hound. Challenge Hound currently supports Under Armour (Map My Run, Map My Walk, Map My Hike, Map My Ride, etc) Garmin Connect and Strava. Visit the following link to set up your app.

If you connect an app, Challenge Hound will automatically sync applicable activities, so there is no need to manually enter. Whether you manually enter or use an App, you'll receive an email notification with your challenge status after each activity you log. You can visit Challenge Hound to view your personal challenge dashboard, as well as full challenge leader boards and charts.

Please try to log your miles on the same day you do them so that we can keep the team moving forward, but don’t worry if you forget. You can log them the next day instead - or any time before 23.59 on 30th June!

Don’t worry, you don’t need to use any fancy technology! If you have a sports watch or app on your phone, this will track your mileage for you exactly but if not, please do simply estimate. Many of us have our favourite routes and we know roughly how long they are; please simply round to the nearest half-mile and round down rather than up so that we are honest! You can also plot your route on Google Maps, mapmyrun, OS maps and several other online mapping applications - or you can use a piece of string and a ruler on the OS map as we all used to do!

You can start any time from one minute past midnight on Wednesday 1st June. You must complete your final mile by 23.59 on Thursday 30th June.

While it’s not necessary to share your story or your journey with us - we’d love to connect with you as we travel across the globe. You can share photos of your activity with us by posting them on social media with the hashtag #TourdeTalents. Or if you aren’t a keen social media user but wouldn’t mind Five Talents sharing the image to promote our journey ping it to us in an email.

We also have a series of photo competitions.

We're so glad you'd like to enter a contest! Participants are limited to one entry for each category. These entries must be submitted via email to events@fivetalents.org.uk before 23.59 on 30th June. A small prize valued around £20 will be awarded to the winner of each category. For photo entries, winners will be selected by staff from our generous sponsors.

Winners will be announced after Tour de Talents 2022 concludes on 23.59 on 30th June.

Our Senior Communications & Events Officer, Megan, is happy to answer any question that may not be found here! She can’t promise to have all the answers but will do her best to handle all your queries and play tech support if you need her to! Email her at: megan@fivetalents.org.uk
